Neelam Gill’s Guide to Model-Off-Duty Beauty - Vogue

For Neelam Gill, flawless beauty is all about the foundation. When creating the ultimate off-duty beauty look, that begins with well-tended skin. “I never had bad skin my whole life, but actually I’m 24 now, and last summer I literally got acne,” says Gill, gesturing to a jaw-level breakout reflected in the mirror of her bathroom at The Standard London. In addition to cutting out all dairy and eschewing alcohol (a habit that never appealed, anyway), Gill starts her routine with a cleanser—and finishes her day the same way. Extra time means a moment for one of Sarah Chapman’s 3D Moisture Infusion sheet masks, but in a pinch, face oil applied in an upward motion, a facial massage for lymphatic drainage, and a lightweight moisturizer will work just fine.

After a coat of SPF, Fenty Beauty’s Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation and smudgings of the brand’s Match Stix Matte Skinstick in Sand turn skin from relatable to immaculate—a feat that Gill appreciates for more than its transformative appeal. “I feel so lucky that, through modeling, I’ve worked with brands that I’ve been the first Indian model for, and people can look at me in a campaign and feel like they’re represented in the mainstream media, because growing up, I didn’t feel that way,” explains Gill, who, as a teenager, was never able to find a foundation shade that suited her. When the model started at Burberry, the brand didn’t have her shade, either, a problem that makeup artist Wendy Rowe solved first by creating a blended cocktail of hues for Gill, and ultimately extending the brand’s shade range. “Moments like that make me feel really proud in my career because I feel like I’m making a difference,” says Gill as she turns her look evening-ready with a creamy metallic eyeshadow from Tom Ford (pulled up at the outer corners, a trick learned from Rowe), swipes YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils over curled top lashes, and adds some Glossier Boy Brow.

A well-scrubbed lip serves as a smooth backdrop for a subtly overlined pout, filled in with Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipstick in Bond Girl and a swipe of Fenty’s Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in Fussy. Ample highlighter and a swirl of Nars blush in Orgasm offer extra oomph—but the final makeup touch is a dusting of bronzer. “When I was growing up, especially being Indian, a lot of people were kind of ashamed of their skin tone, and I feel like that’s because in my community, especially in India, skin lightening is such a big industry,” explains Gill. “I’m the complete opposite. I want my skin to look more tan and darker…everyone is beautiful. Diversity is beautiful.”
