There a few things in existence that can tell you more about humanity today than Google search trends do. We turn to the search engine to tell us how to get to all of our destinations, check the weather, and sometimes, ask meaningful questions we're too embarrassed to ask one another. In other words: We are all desperately dependent on it.
That, of course, is applicable to our little beauty universe, where we're bombarded with new products, trends, and application techniques every single day. That's why it's always exciting for us when Google reveals its biggest beauty search trends of the year. 2019's list has just dropped, and it does not disappoint.
As it turns out, this year the world was both obsessed with and perplexed by a brand of stick-on nail-art wraps called Color Street. The brand spread like rapid-fire across Facebook this year thanks to local independent salespeople and dozens of popular group forums dedicated to selling and buying its products — so much so that directions on how to apply the nail wraps ranked at the very top of Google's beauty search trends for the year. Goes to show you should never underestimate that one person you went to high school with who's always got something to sell: They might just be carrying the year's hottest product. (By the way, Allure has not tried nor reviewed Color Street nail wraps, so we can't say much about the purported product quality just yet.)
If we can learn anything else from this year's search trends — not to be confused with the most searched terms, period; think of them like trending Twitter hashtags — it's that it's never too late to go back to basics. Queries about makeup and other product application topics topped the list, proving that no matter what products folks are using, they're turning to the internet to make sure they're using them right. Primer, blush, mascara, and plenty of other must-have beauty staples all left people wondering how to put them on. And unsurprisingly, falsies also had people pretty confused and altogether frustrated, as questions about applying fake lashes ranked for the third year in a row.
