Riverdale’s Madelaine Petsch Reveals Her 38-Step Beauty Routine - Vogue

“I like to take my time,” explains South African actor Madelaine Petsch about her whopping 38-step beauty routine. “If that means I have to take two extra hours in the morning, I’m gonna do it.” Petsch is prepping for a day full of meetings in New York while on hiatus from filming her hit show Riverdale, which was recently renewed for a fifth season. After lighting her Byredo candle—a trick to help transform any hotel bathroom into a homey space—she gets down to business.

Skin care begins with a series of de-puffing, sculpting, and lifting tools to prime her complexion for makeup. “I definitely started to take care of my skin when I booked the show,” she admits while swiping an icy massaging ball in upward motions. Next up? A dab of toner courtesy of Petsch’s facialist, Renée Rouleau, a few drops of vitamin C serum, and a hefty layer of moisturizer. Since her onscreen character Cheryl Blossom is a lipstick aficionado, Petsch pays special attention to her pout, exfoliating and scrubbing the area with a silicone tool and patting a mask on top for extra hydration. Finally, a layer of under-eye cream, which she warns to “never ever drag along your eye”—a handy tip learned on set from her costars.

Makeup kicks off with a dash of khaki-colored eyeliner and a swipe of neutral shimmer on her lids. “I actually used to be a competitive dancer for a really long time, so I was doing my makeup at a very young age,” she says. “I’m not going to say I was good at it!” But over the years, practice has made perfect. Petsch curls and preps her lashes with an eyelash primer. “It’s kind of like when you prime your skin,” she explains of the base coat, letting it sit while applying CC cream and concealer. When the primer is dry, Petsch goes in with her black mascara and a lash comb. “It just really spreads them out,” she says of the drugstore find. “It’s night and day.”

Cheeks are amplified with a peach-hue cream blush and a dab of shimmering highlighter for a “healthy glow.” Lastly, Petsch applies her tried and true redhead-approved brow strategy, which includes two different-colored brow pencils (blonde and brown) and a smudge-free gel. “Cheryl’s taught me a lot about taking risks with color and fashion,” she explains. As for the 38th step? A dab of Glossier’s cult cherry Balm Dotcom for a hint of shine.
