“I just have barely any time for myself. It’s work and baby,” shares Violette, the Paris born, New York-based makeup artist and Estée Lauder Global Beauty Director who’s spent over a decade as the darling of brands like Dior, MAC, and Sephora. A new mom to eight-month-old Inès, she’s a little shocked at how quickly time has already melted away since her pre-baby, post-art school days knocking on doors of Manhattan modeling agencies offering to paint faces for practice.
With her own YouTube channel of French girl beauty secrets, collaborations with industry friends like stylist Allison Bornstein and chef Sophia Roe, and an ever-increasing list of creative and consulting duties for her clients, the concept of work-life balance is a tricky one. And as her work has diversified over the past year, so has her relationship with self-care.
On her Instagram feed, Violette is quick to share her new reality. Like how she struggled with hair loss during and after pregnancy, feels exhausted from ultra-early mornings, and has even taken to wearing sweats for the first time in her life (which are, of course, chic). The change that’s the hardest? An abbreviated sleep schedule. “I admit that’s the only thing I am missing about my ex-life,” she says with a laugh. “But I am stronger. I work harder. I feel like becoming a mom gave me superpowers, you know?”
Below, Violette shares the personal tips, beloved products, and wellness practices that have helped her find balance in her new power role:
“Chérie-Me” Moments
“Each day, I have 30 minutes (no matter what) of a self-love moment. I call this my ‘chérie-me’ moment. As I don’t have time for ‘me time,’ I am going to use things I have to do like showering, applying skincare and makeup and getting dressed up as ‘chérie-me’ moments. I put on clothes that I love and get inspired for a makeup look. While I do it, I am trying to put a lot of self-love in my intention. Like, I don’t do makeup to fix myself, but to celebrate myself.”
Vetted Products
“I did a lot of testing and finally came up with my pregnancy beauty closet. I even made a video about it to help other expecting moms. I love doing my makeup even more now because this became ‘me time.’” The must-have products? Estee Lauder Double Wear Radiant Concealer, which Violette swears by for its all-day stay: “I put it on and forget about it. Just the best.” For eyeliner, it’s Glossier Pro Tip Brush Point Liquid Eyeliner, which “doesn’t move. I put it on and I usually forget I have it on, and then I rub my eye…classic! But it doesn’t move and it’s easy to clean up.” And to help her relax, Violette lights “the chicest incense I know,” Cinnamon Projects Incense Series Box.
Transcendental Meditation
“I tried many meditation techniques, and none of them helped me as much. It’s incredible. I feel much more rested. Alert. Sharp. Everything gets clear…. My energy is up.”
